On the South Steps
It’s 2/14…do you know where your future Senator is?

One tricky part about being in a Senate primary this early is creating buzz.  What have the many candidates and possible candidates been doing lately?

  • Elizabeth Ames Jones had a campaign kickoff tour.  The spotlight was quickly stolen from her when a pin dropped.
  • David Dewhurst seems to avoid every state issue du jour.  He sent the Senate a letter wanting a hearing about rolling blackouts, but he didn’t make a media deal out of it.
  • Roger Williams allegedly went to CPAC.  He probably told a handful of non-Texans about that time he played baseball.  His aide was probably disappointed that Roger never asked him to pull out the Sharpie that he walked four blocks to buy for autographs.
  • Ted Cruz got his campaign manager to pull in a favor from his previous job to get some water carried.  Something had to be done about the perception that the internet exclusively loves Michael Williams.  That explains the expensive banner ads for Cruz that are everywhere.
  • Tom Leppert thinks it’s wise to tell numerous people that he’s not thinking about running to win but to increase his profile for a 2014 statewide office run.
  • I still don’t think Ron Paul is running for Senate.
  • Craig James can’t understand why everyone hates him.  I don’t know whether or not I think he’s running.  He’s met with some potential staff.
  • I saw Michael Williams at Stein Mart on Anderson Ln, and that’s about it.  I’m told he went to CPAC.  He hired another staffer.  He’s supposed to testify about rolling blackouts tomorrow.

Boring.  Here’s what should have happened:

  • Ted Cruz should have testified before the Senate Committee of the Whole about the need for Voter I.D.  His stump speech still sounds as though he’s running for AG, and the venue suits that.
  • David Dewhurst should have jumped in front of the camera to discuss eminent domain passing out of his Senate, Voter I.D. passing out of his Senate, or any of the other things happening in his Capitol.
  • Michael Williams should have announced a statewide finance committee.  Prove everyone wrong.  He should waltz into the committee tomorrow and tell everyone that the blackouts happened because Obama won’t let us drill and the EPA worships dirt and deregulation will save us $700 trillion per second and it’s EAJ’s fault for being a bad commissioner.
